Bay Primary School
Making a Splash
This term, the children will be studying 'Tiger, Tiger' by Lynne Reid Banks. Our supporting texts are, 'Escape from Pompeii' by Christina Balit and 'The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore' by William Joyce.
Most of our Summer Term writing is linked to our topic of 'Romans in Britain'. The children will be retelling the story of The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore', writing a persuasive piece of writing on the theme of 'Zoos', a narrative poem about the Celtic warrior Boudicca, a letter from a Roman soldier, a Roman adventure story and cinquains.
At Bay Primary School, we follow the 'Maths No Problem!' scheme. We will complete our work on 'Time' before focusing on 'Fractions, Decimals and Percentages' in the first half of the Summer term, then moving onto 'Geometry', 'Position and Movement' and 'Time'. Children will also be taking the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check in June.
We are learning about 'Living Things and their Habitats', making use of our local environment to explore this topic in the real world. Children will be involved in the five enquiries which are; Pattern Seeking, Observation over Time, Research using Secondary Sources, Comparative and Fair Test, Grouping, Identifying and Classifying.
Our History topic is 'Romans in Britain'. We will be thinking about three main questions:
When did the Romans invade and why?
Did native Britons resist or welcome the Romans and why?
How did the Roman influence the culture of the people already in Britain?
Our Geography lessons will be linked to our History work. We will be locating towns and cities that were once prominent Roman settlements and learning to use Ordnance Survey maps, pinpointing given locations using their grid reference.
In Art, we will be using ceramic mosaic to produce a piece of art, combining visual and tactile qualities, experimenting with different styles which artists have used and explaining art from other periods of history.
Our Design Technology for the Summer Term is linked to our topic- Romans in Britain. We will research Roman diets, specifically the types of vegetables grown and eaten at that time and will look at existing soup recipes before using these to design and create our own 'Seasonal Soup'.
In Computing, the children will be putting together a simple animation using paper to create a flick book, understanding animation frames and make a simple animation using 2Animate.
Our Music lessons this term will be delivered through the Music programme Charanga.
Our topic this term is called 'Our World'.
We will continue to develop our understanding of the French language using iLanguages.
The Summer Term topics are 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me'.
Our indoor PE sessions for the first half of the Summer Term will be taught by gymnastics specialist Harry Sheader. Outdoor Games will be Athletics and Cricket. It is an expectation that all children will have the correct PE kit in school on their PE days.
