Making a Splash
All pupils in Year 4 in England are required to take the MTC. It’s purpose is to determine whether year 4 pupils can fluently recall their multiplication tables and to help schools to identify pupils who require additional support. There is no pass rate or threshold. The DfE will create a report on overall results across all schools in England to measure improvements. The check takes place in June each year.
The check will take place in school on line and there are 25 questions and 6 seconds to answer each question. It focuses on multiplication (not division) and the check’s software has been programmed to show children more questions from the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables, as these are trickier times tables focused on more in Year 4. (The 2s, 5s and 10s are more of a focus in Years 2 and 3.) As it gets closer to the Multiplication Check there will be the opportunity for pupils to practice using the format in school.
